Chapter 6 Tools

This chapter serves as a reference page for the tools that we will use in this course.

6.1 Google Sheets

Part 1

Part 2 - More on Google Sheets

6.2 Using Tableau for Visualizations

6.2.1 Background

Tableau is heavily used among business analysts and data scientists. As we use Tableau, we will not be covering all the powerful data connections and dashboard tools in the software in our class. We will be focusing on creating different data views for visual analytics in this class. The links below will be used during the semester.

6.2.2 Registration and Download

Tableau provides free access for college students to their professional tools. They also have a Tableau public option for all users. We will be using their training videos and online guides to help us get up to speed with the tool. You will need to create a sign up through the link at the top right of their website to see some of the videos we will use during the semester.

  1. Request a student license by filling out this form. You will be asked to provide proof that you are currently a student (for example, a picture of your student ID).
  2. While waiting for Tableau to verify your student status, you can download Tableu Desktop here and get started with the 14-day trial.
  3. After verifying your student status, Tableau will email you a product key. Use this key to activate Tableau and use it after the 14-day trial.

When your one-year student license is expired, you can fill out the same form to request another one-year license.

6.3 Statistics Google Sheets Tool

For calculating p-values and performing statistical tests, use this tool:

Statistics Tool

You will have to sign in to a Google account (your BYU-Idaho email will work) and click on “File” and “Make a Copy” to use the tool in your own Google Drive. Note that there are several sheets - one for each kind of test that we will be performing or discussing in this course. You will only need to edit the cells that are highlighted blue, but if something happens and you need to access a fresh copy of the tool then you can just go back to this link and click “Make a copy” again.

6.4 Data Resources

This is where the data that we will be using for this semester can be found:
