Technology Set-up

Background

This task is all about setting up the software. There are a lot of readings, but many of them are short. Getting this first step done correctly and soon will set you up for success in the rest of the semester.

Reading

Doing readings teach you to do the things that a data analyst or scientist does.

• o Being a better online reader
• o Chapter 1: R for Data Scientists
• o Chapter 4: R for Data Scientists - Workflow Basics
• o Lesson 3 R and Rstudio basics, skip section 3.3
• o Modern Drive: Chapter 1 Getting Started with Data in R
• o Optional: If you are new to R and want more practice, I recommend the swirl package. It is an interactive tutorial. First, run this code install.packages('swirl') . Then load the library with this code library(swirl) Then when presented with 15 different modules I recommend completing 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12. (7 and 8 are optional, we will hit them again later in the semester). Say “no” when it asks if you want credit for completing a module.

Tasks

• Read the course syllabus and make sure you understand our class routine and grading
• Download and install R and RStudio. R must be installed first so that RStudio can use it.
  • First: R (Mac OS X | Windows )
  • Second: R (Mac OS X | Windows )
  • Fix your settings in R-Studio to use the code diagnostics
• Watch John Rauser Presentation
  • Use the following google spreadsheet to input your three favorite segments of the video. Use your course standardized name lastname firstletterfirstname – For example mine is hathawayj.
